Frequently Asked Questions

How Our Video Compressor Works

Our video compressor uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (WASM) to process your video files entirely inside your web browser. When you upload a video, it never leaves your device. There are no server uploads, no cloud processing, and no third-party access to your content. This makes our compressor safe for sensitive, confidential, or personal videos that you would not want stored on a remote server.

The compression engine re-encodes your video using H.264 (x264), the most widely supported video codec in the world. H.264 produces excellent visual quality at significantly smaller file sizes than older codecs. The quality-to-size tradeoff is controlled through CRF (Constant Rate Factor) values. Lower CRF values (18-22) prioritize visual quality and produce larger files, while higher values (28-35) prioritize smaller file sizes with more visible compression artifacts. Our "Balanced" setting at CRF 23 is the sweet spot recommended by encoding experts for general-purpose compression.

Beyond bitrate reduction, the compressor also optimizes the video container structure, strips unnecessary metadata, and applies modern encoding optimizations like two-pass encoding analysis. The result is a smaller file that plays on virtually every device and platform: Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, smart TVs, gaming consoles, and all modern web browsers.

Supported File Types

Our compressor accepts all major video formats as input: MP4 (MPEG-4),MOV (Apple QuickTime), AVI (Audio Video Interleave),MKV (Matroska), and WebM (Google's open format). Regardless of the input format, the output is always an optimized MP4 file with H.264 video and AAC audio, ensuring maximum compatibility across devices and platforms. This means you can compress a MOV file from your iPhone, an AVI file from a legacy system, or an MKV file from a media server and get a universally playable MP4 as the result.

Why Privacy Matters for Video Files

Traditional online video compressors require you to upload your video to their servers, where it is processed and then (hopefully) deleted. This creates real security risks: your video could be intercepted during upload, stored without your knowledge, or exposed through a data breach. For professionals in law, healthcare, finance, education, and government who handle sensitive video recordings, this is unacceptable. Our browser-based approach eliminates these risks entirely. Your video data stays in your browser's memory during processing and is discarded when you close the tab. No accounts, no uploads, no tracking — just fast, private compression that works on files up to 500 MB.
